Les Caraibes

My D-mates (as in my intern group) and I went to Les Caraibes in Laiya, San Juan, Batangas for the weekend (Aug 22-23) for a short team bonding prior to OB and Medicine rotation. (Siyempre, had to get out from internship for a while at sa ospital na kami mag holiday! Boohoo!) However, what did we learn about each other?? Um, not much I guess. For some reason, we didn't get to talk much about ourselves hehe usually, there would be some talking while drinking, but for some reason I cannot fathom, we weren't able to talk much hehe

Anyway, we were dismissed by the hospital by 930 AM. Unfortunately, some of us were stranded in UST because of the flash flood. So we waited for the flood to clear and ate lunch in Mister Kebab in UP Tech Ayala something. Anyway, we were finally out of QC by 1PM and just met the "stranded" Manila people along Quirino Hi-way. We were excited, hoping that the beach is really nice and smooth without need for scuba shoes or sandals. However, PGIs that we are, sleeping is still a major part of our life, even at the van hehe

We got there about quarter to 5PM, and lo and behold! Les Caraibes can be found almost at the end of the Laiya strip, near La Luz already, where the road is really narrow, accommodating only one van at a time (if you have a vehicle bigger than a van, good luck!) The accommodations were great, clean, and relatively nice for the price that we got it. (Worth every penny comes to mind!) And we were pretty excited to get to the beach, because the sand looks nice when we passed by Virgin Beach...

Unfortunately, the beach sand in this part of Laiya is not as smooth... It wasn't that rocky... But it was pebbly... The beach may be white, but lots of pebbles! Poof! Dreams of walking barefoot gone! There were also lots of people, day trippers and campers from the neighboring resorts (well, can't really do anything about that part...)

So, we took lots of photos, and then went swimming. The water was clear, but we noticed that the sand gradually deepens rather fast (especially for those of us not able to swim or not very tall either), though I didn't notice any sudden deep scary holes. When it was getting dark, we washed up (very cold already) while waiting for dinner.

Dinner was very long! I think it took an hour (almost all of us could go washed up already, but we ordered so long ago, so we thought that it will arrive any minute! Hehe Patay-Gutom Interns tlga!) for orders to arrive. We had Sinigang na Baboy (hot soup is really nice against the cool winds), Inihaw na Liempo (could not go wrong with that) and Chicken in Moroccan style with Yang Chao fried rice. Price ranges generally depends on number of people (not on food itself): good for 1 (PhP 150), 2-4 (PhP 350-400), 6-8 (PhP 500-600), and 10-12 (PhP 900-1000). Obviously, we ordered for the 10-12, though there were 14 of us, including the driver. Either we're really hungry or just plain takaw, or masarap tlga but the food disappeared after about 15 minutes, compared to our long waiting time hehe We didn't even had the energy or time spared to take a picture of the food!

Then it was time to bond over drinks, shots, lemons, chips, and oreos! We stayed in one of the tables facing the beach, where it's cool and big enough to accomodate all of us. Blah, blah, blah, dancing around, then lying at the beach to look at the stars, then BAM! The main event of the evening... of the trip... My ELECTROCUTION!

I mean it! Some of us went back to our table to get something and were running and playing around. I touched one of the bamboo poles to catch my balance using both hands, and the next thing I knew, I couldn't get my arms away from the pole! I was just being electrocuted (actually, my first thought was, "seizure, seizure!"). One of my friends hit me on the shoulder, who felt the electricity. For me, I just can't get my arms away, and I can't cry for help. I just kept on looking above the roof, with thoughts of "Paano na ito? Hindi ko maalis kamay ko! Hindi ako makapagsalita! Hindi ba ako na feel ni Jecai? Takte, hinga... hinga..." then I just blacked out!

I later learned that two of my friends actually touched me and felt the electricity, they just don't know how to go about it (Cha thought of ripping me from the post with my hair, which I would have been thankful since I won't feel the pain anyway). They shouted for help, with one of the staff going over and kicked me to get me away from the pole. (So that's why they were there... Apparently, these electrecutions happened before... And they didn't even prevent it? Posted a sign anywhere "Caution: Possible electrocution" to warn others?) They said I fell forward (probably, why I have a scraped wound by my knee), with my eyes and face full of sand. Lyka felt for my pulses, and shouted "cardiac zero." (Imagine! Code?! Sa Beach? On vacation? Ng walang stethoscope?!) Whoever was still awake got up to checked what's happening. (Tin and Melli were actually on the way to bathroom, when they realized the commotion. Tin went to get her camera, and hence the documentation! Hehe) They lifted me on the table (with the staff carrying me one way, and then the other, so I sort of twisted until they agreed on what direction to take). Fortunately, Jan said I was spontaneously breathing by the time I was laid on the table.

Then I just remembered them over me and asking me if I'm alright. The owner came by also to check on me. Then I remember sizzling hotdog being placed on the table, which apparently was sort of a way to reconcile with the incident? By that time, I felt my body aching, including my head; I just want to vomit, I almost went into a code and my life hanging by a jolt of electricity, and I was given sizzling hotdog? Come on! Anyway, people were just leading me back to the room, and our things were being packed up. (And some of us were just dead asleep at the beach! They only knew about the incident the next morning.)

By that time, we already finished two bottles of GSM blue, two bottles of the Bar Vodka, and a bottle of tequila. Knowing myself, where I couldn't refuse any drinks and continuously challenging myself, I know that I can't possible sleep or lay down because my head still feels heavy... where I have to vomit first prior to sleeping... which I did, thrice! Knowing my ability to drink so much and still remain conscious, they made me take a shower with the doors open, just in case I would need help. (Nope, hindi ako gagaya kay Chino-Myke-Jappy incident. Kayang-kaya ko pa mag-isa!) Finally, I slept.

I know I originally hoped to be able to wake very early the next day, then take pictures by the rocks (in La Luz already) etc, but no... Realistically, I wouldn't get up because we just had a drinking session last night! AND I was electrocuted... so forgive me if I can't get up right? My body was aching! My back and my calves, oh my calves hurt! I was already thinking into complications like rhabdomyolysis as complication of electrocution? I was also able to observe my wounds better, with an ugly third-degree burn on the right wrist, blisters on my left hand, and scraped on my left knee. (I checked, third-degree na kasi paresthesia na at wala ng pain! Pressure nalang pag pinipindot.)

The rest of the stay was uneventful. We had a late check out because there are some enjoying and still swimming around, while some are just plain enjoying the aircon and sleeping (ahem, ahem) hehe We stayed near the beach, where we hanged out the previous night where some of us dozed off... though I was wary of touching any bamboo poles this morning.

I got the story from my friends. Took me a while to realize that the resort is so stupid, that if these electrocution happened before with previous guests, why don't they fix it? Even a sign of caution would be helpful! But no, I guess they just give sizzling hotdogs instead. Besides, how would anyone suspect to get electrocuted from a bamboo post in the middle of the beach? I know metal is a good conductor of electricity, I wasn't even wet when I touched the pole! My friends also looked for whatever piece of wiring was open, which was the source of electricity, but they couldn't find it either. I remember Cha getting riled up at the staff who was explaining and defending himself, that what if we weren't doctors? What if I didn't breathe spontaneously? Are they ready to code? Do they have a doctor in the house? Will sizzling hotdog help me live? Geez...

Thus, no tip for you guys! No letter of recommendation either!
I would have sue (just like lots of people advised me), but Batangas is so far away and I don't really want to spend so much time there! Mom just said to file a letter of complaint to Bureau of Tourism... though I'm not also sure how that would help! So, I hope this would help! I hope lots would be able to read this and see... or at least warn of the electrifying bamboo posts!

I don't know why I would want a souvenir with the killer bamboo post, but I complied with my friends' wishes... and thought about the future victims of this deadly post!

Outings!

I love planning outings! As in!
Sometimes, I think I even love PLANNING it more than the actual event itself!
Weird, right? Hehe

Unfortunately, as much I want to travel (especially with my family because they would be the one paying! hehe), I couldn't do much traveling this year because of my medical internship at DOH programme, where we rotate around the different specialties around East Ave Medical Center, Heart Center, Lung Center, Phil Children's Medical Center, and National Kidney Institute... and Amang Rodriguez (though not exactly a hospital, as we will be divided and become assigned doctors to a local health clinic).

So, thankfully, our August rotation has Saturday half day and Sunday free. My DOH internship group is going to bond, right before we go to the much-awaited OB rotation (ugh!), where we will stay at EAMC for 2 months on (gasp) September and October (which are the "BER" season, where lots of babies are born... count 9 months backwards, and these would be the cold months, where it would be nice to cuddle and warm thyself)! After the OB rotation, we would have the Medicine rotation on November and December (I guess that's no Christmas family vacation for me huhu and I was the one who BOOKED their tickets to Coron! Huhu). Hence, it will be MONTHS before we can rest again. That's why, we got ourselves a weekend to go out and have some fun before digging ourselves in toxicity when we go back to EAMC.

They wanted a beach outing (Darn! I'm a mountain kinda girl, but it's okay. I still love planning outings.) particularly at Laiya, Batangas. They originally thought of Virgin Beach Resort, where one of them went last summer. I told them that there were many other different resorts, and I volunteered to research on them hehe

I will try to post my final "research" paper here, in case anybody's interested
BTW, we are 13-14 in a group, so I mostly concentrated on bigger accommodations :)
Laiya, Batangas Beach Resorts - candidates for our resort: Virgin Beach Resort, Triple G Resort, Les Caraibes (our winning choice for this outing), Sigayan Bay Beach Resort, Palm Beach Resort, Blue Coral Beach Resort, Sabangan Beach Resort, Laiya White Cove, Punto Miguel, Kabayan Beach Resort
Rent a Van - contact list and numbers for renting a van (also the price list given to me for 2-way trip manila-laiya-manila)

Okay, it's 1130 again. Past my bed time. I was hoping to start sleeping early...

Accomplice

If you were to runaway, who would you go to?
Are you going to go to your closest friends? Probably.
But... that would be the first place that your parents would look for, right?

It was a weird day yesterday.
Some friends from the past suddenly came into my life, and asked for my help. It was all so sudden, they just need a little help getting out. I wasn't even sure what was happening or why I did it, but I helped them. I just heard the urgency in their voice, and though we haven't been communicating for several years (and some discrepancies and disagreements last time that we saw each other), I trust that their decision is correct and I just did it, I helped them get out. I wasn't even sure if this was really serious, or this was just a game. But I played along with it, and followed their instructions. When we got out and it was "safe", that's when I had my explanation: child abuse. I would have ran away too in their situation.

As we waited for the phase 3 of their plan, waiting for one of their friends to pick them up, we talked for a while about what's happening with us. It has been a long while, and we tried to catch up. I suddenly felt very nostalgic, looking at all the experiences we had together (there were many ups AND downs). I just kept on thinking if we weren't really friends for some time, I don't think they would have come running to me.

Which is a pretty good idea actually. Because her parents knows that our families aren't communicating, and suddenly they asked helped from me! I think it would be a while before they even thought about asking us for anything...

List of Email Scammers

Here are the list of companies and details that I found out to be fraud using the Email Trace system, meaning the email address from where they sent it is actually different from where they claim to be the company is coming from. (Darn it! I would have saved myself lots if I just knew this from the start!)

Everyone knows that it's so easy to create an email account on the web using Yahoo, Google, Hotmail, etc. So stealing money using new emails happens a lot! Pretending to be yahoo.uk etc! Hmph!

Go on and google up your prospective sellers! Look on their reputations, names, contact info if they are scammers before sending anything. There are many other sites with list of scammers.

How Not To Be Scammed

Shopping online? Seems so convenient isn't it? And it's sometimes way cheaper, too!
But before you go and send that money, here are some tips not to be fried!

1. First, research about the company that you will be buying from. Google their company name, contact person, even email address and type scam (e.g. "Orient Trade" Scam ). Sometimes, as easy as that, you get to know if the seller is a scam or not. You will find blogs, lists, forums of people telling their experiences with such sellers. You could also ask them what ever questions you may have.

2. Try to trace their email. Scammers easily create a new identity, a new email (especially with lots of free accounts such as yahoo, hotmail, google, etc), which could be created from anywhere in the world. For me, I use Email Trace. They have a box there, and I could copy and paste the email address heading. Sometimes, it's only accurate to the country, but that's fine with me (it said that I'm surfing from Rizal, but actually I'm from QC). I have some potential sellers saying they're from UK, but they're actually from Nigeria (where majority of scammers live). It's just a little hard to trace, when the seller is Chinese :).

3. Try to verify online their authenticity. For me, I try and ask for the seller to take an actual photo of the item that I am buying, requesting for him to write his company name as background. I also tell him to send an actual picture of the serial numbers, etc.

Another buyer told me, he wants to see an actual photo of the delivery receipt with his name on it and the total price, with the items that he's buying.

4. If you've researched, verified, and convinced yourself that he's ligit, then the next step: Payment! Trust me, there's nothing like COD if you live in the same country and can do meet-ups (actually most of the above things I'm not so strict on when I know I could easily contact and meet the seller).

Western Union and Bank Wire Transfers don't have protection! NEVER SEND MONEY through that unless you really KNOW and SEEN this person. It cannot guarantee anything. They are just the messengers, and once the money was delivered, they basically cannot do anything. Even if you complain to them, give them evidence, there is really nothing that they can do... Especially if it's an international transaction. Just wish and pray that karma will come. Scammers insist on this payment method because you won't catch them once they got your money. They claim to have no other modes of payment? That's bull! If they're a big company that serious in making their customers happy, there is always a way!

If the transaction is from eBay, and you pay using PayPal, it's easily covered by the Buyer Protection Program. So, you will... eventually received your item (sometimes it takes so long because of the customs). However, take a look at that package and test it before you go and rate your seller. Sometimes, there are defects. And if there are complaints or if you didn't get your package or the seller doesn't reply to you after you paid (which happens a lot for those scheming $%&*@), you can go to PayPal and file a resolution dispute. (I experienced this, so I should know.)

If the transaction is outside ebay, and you are using PayPal, there is still a chance of Buyer protection, though I haven't tested it out yet (I am still in the middle of a resolution dispute conducted outside eBay).

5. Next step: shipping! If there is an option to choose shipping, avoid using EMS at all costs! Especially if you live in the Philippines! Try to google "EMS Philippines" and you will see lots of blogs and forums with complaints on the corruption of the Customs and the length of unnecessary time standing by in the Post.
A friend told me FedEx is still the best, though it's really more expensive. But hey, better safe than sorry right? I'm telling you now, once you still have the chance.

Because I'm now in a middle of a resolution dispute, because either the seller didn't send the items yet (but he did send me the tracking number already; just that the status haven't been updated in a week! I'm getting white hairs from worry!) Or it really is here in the Philippines, but since it's EMS, I will get it in a month's time! Geez...

Yup, it was actually all that worrying in my mind that prompted me to write this blog and share my "wisdom"...
